The Daily Music Post Project, Part II

Here’s the next few days’ worth of my results from a recent Facebook status challenge: posting video of a song, one song per day for a month, that meets certain pre-arranged criteria. Ready your slings and arrows!

<<>> April 17 … Day 06: “A song that reminds you of somewhere.”

Our winner: “Somewhere” (sung by the incomparable Renee Fleming)

Another take on this one: the Sydney Youth Orchestra.

And yet another, which, in spite of the YouTube entry’s title, I think must be the Yale Whiffenpoofs.  I’ll stand corrected if need be, but I think I’m right.

<<>> April 18 … Day 07: “A song that reminds you of a certain event.” Well, that was easy.

Our winner: “Keeping the Dream Alive” (Freiheit Munchener).  One video commenter suggested that this reminded him or her of a Wings (i.e. Paul McCartney Wings) tune; I originally thought maybe we’d found a lost Beatles track.  I’m not sure I would have taken it particularly seriously, aside from the neat vocal harmonies, except, well, take a look at what introduced lots of us to it …the fine work of Stacey Geneczko.

<<>> April 19 … Day 08: “A song that you know all the words to.”

Our winner: “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” by Duke Ellington, covered here by Chicago.  The studio version of this I like even better, but live always has its moments.

Honorable mention: “Alice’s Restaurant” (Arlo Guthrie).  Or at least I know enough of the words to be able to play proper musical accompaniment for my good friend Mark Tavares (we refer the reader back to the Charles River Creative Arts Program noontime shows and the annual forcing of “Alice’s” onto the camp population).  As a side note, I think it important to emphasize that I have the non-marketable skill of being able to recite the “twenty-seven 8 x 10 color glossy pictures” riff, from memory, in one breath.

<<>> April 20 … Day 09: “A song that you can dance to.” Again, it was hard to knock this one down to one result. So I didn’t. Ha.

Our winner: “Send Me On My Way” (Rusted Root, as featured in the movie “Ice Age”)

Honorable mention: “Sway” (as covered by Michael Buble).

Another honorable mention: “Jump in de Line” (Harry Belafonte).

Another honorable mention: “Take Me To the River” (as covered by The Commitments).

Another honorable mention: “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” (Michael Jackson).

Another honorable mention: “Mas Que Nada” (Sergio Mendes).  Yeah, baby.

Another honorable mention: “Some Days You Gotta Dance” (Dixie Chicks).

Another honorable mention: “I Want You Back” (Jackson Five).

Another honorable mention: “I Wish” (Stevie Wonder).

<<>> April 21 … Day 10: “A song that makes you fall asleep.”

Our winner: “The Secret, The Candle, and Love” (Andreas Vollenweider on the amplified new age smooth jazz concert harp).  Part of an album that had a lot more interesting things than this, but this will get the heart rate down.
